Examine the Lyrics 2: Grenade

My brother hates this song.  I went to pick him up from Pochi’s a few weekends back and the song came on and he automatically exclaimed loudly, “I hate this song, change the channel.”  I thought about the song, and I’ve realized I’m not a fan of the song either.  And after having a long conversation with my friend about the song, wherein at some point we discussed which part of the body we’d prefer to take a bullet, I’ve realize just how stupid it really is.  But I’ll let you decide for yourself and then at the end, if you still like it at least I tried. 😉

Let’s take a look shall we:

Easy come, easy go, that’s just how you live
Oh, take, take, take it all but you never give
Should’ve known you was trouble from the first kiss
Had your eyes wide open, why were they open?

Gave you all I had and you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked
‘Cause what you don’t understand is

Right off we get their relationship – Bruno is apparently deeply in love with this easy-going bitch of a girl who is selfish and only does what she wants.  That’s a fairly specific girl, Mr. Mars (heh!  Mr. Mars sounds so silly), and it sounds like she doesn’t appreciate all you do for her.  That said, I’m going to digress for a second, and rant.

I don’t understand why nice guys always seem to date females who treat the guy like shit.  Though, I don’t understand why girls must always try and “reform” the badboy either. I mean, what’s the deal with being all masochistic and getting off on someone who acts like they hate your guts (or takes advantage of you)?  Or, not accepting the person for who they are?  I mean, you’re the one dating this person, shouldn’t you see them for who they are rather than the person you think they might become (or who you want them to become)?  Dating confounds me sometimes all the time, which is most likely why I don’t do it.  And hey!  It works, I don’t have to deal with all this messing with my head BS like all you others do.

Back on topic, of course, at first we’re sympathetic to him because all he wants is for her to love him back, but then he decides to become creepy.

I’d catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I’d jump in front of a train for ya
You know I’d do anything for ya

I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won’t do the same
No, no, no, no

Umm, while it would be nice for a guy to sacrifice his life for me, isn’t that a bit extreme?  Not to mention that, he says he’ll do it, but when a grenade actually comes flying at my face (which could happen!) would he really catch it?  Because my instinct tells me no.  Moreover, I would never sacrifice my life for someone else,  and if that makes me selfish then so be it.

I mean, bullet through the brain?  I’m sorry but if there’s any place on my body that I don’t want to get shot, it’s my head.  Who puts their head in the way of a bullet?!

I mean, he should have written he’d take a bullet for her, not take a bullet through the brain – one way you’re dying, enough said.  The other way at least you’re still alive.

And if you need to jump in front of a train to save your precious girlfriend (who in addition to being a bitch, is also a dumbass for standing on the train tracks when a train is coming), maybe you should rethink the reasons why she was there.  1) she could be suicidal, in which case you get her medical attention rather than save her life over and over again from the dangerous things she does to try to kill herself.  2) she may very well be trying to kill herself to get away from you.  Just think about it.  Or option 3) someone’s trying to kill her.

I guess it can be summed up in this one question: what the hell makes this girl so special that you would give up your life for her?  I mean, someone’s obviously trying to kill her.  Maybe you should let them, she sounds like a pretty shitty person.

Black, black, black and blue, beat me ’til I’m numb
Tell the devil I said, hey, when you get back to where you’re from
Mad women, bad women, that’s just what you are, yeah
You’ll smile in my face then rip the brakes out my car

Gave you all I had and you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, yes, you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked
‘Cause what you don’t understand is

Alright, she’s a bitch, she’s dumb, and she’s psychotic and you still want to save her life?  She tried to kill you.  She ripped.  The.  Breaks.  Off.  Your.  Car.  Get a restraining order against her and GTFO.

If my body was on fire
Ooh, you’d watch me burn down in flames
You said you loved me, you’re a liar
‘Cause you never, ever, ever did, baby

Wow.  I can’t believe you’re willing to sacrifice your life for this terrible person, if we can ever call her that.  In fact, Bruno Mars, I call bullshit.  I think you’re trying to use this song so that all the women who listen to this go, “Awww!  He’s so sweet!  I totally want him to have my children, and my panties!” When in fact, it’s just a ploy to get women to fall at your feet.  You say you’d save the life of this terrible woman to show that it you value forgiveness more than revenge, but you’re just doing the same thing you did with “Just the Way You Are” – you’re telling women exactly what we want to hear.

Well, I can see through you, Bruno: You’re a PHONY.  A big fat PHONY.
